2024 does not have to be scary or overwhelming. Perhaps you have been here for many years. Maybe it is your first time around. The second half of the year can be even more challenging than the first. Test prepping, cramming all standards, new students, awards ceremonies, and the list goes on. Many find ourselves thinking about the long coveted spring break already. Remember, the only thing you can control is your attitude and how you show up. Here are 5 Teacher resolutions you can make to have a smooth second half of the school year in 2024.
#1- Make a resolution to change your heart and your thinking. Everything starts with the mind and you have the power for your own mind control. Overburdened with your after school duty, change your heart and thinking and belief about it. Acceptance is the best way to cope with things you do not wish to do.
#2- Resolution for a better attitude. Tell yourself and others, I made a resolution to have a positive attitude this year. Start with catching yourself when you are complaining and change how you feel by looking at the glass half full. You are going to have to finish this year so get that attitude adjusted.
#3- Have a resolution to do “light exercises” throughout the week. Everyone knows, the science backs it up, exercise is one of the top things anyone can do to help reduce stress, improve thinking, and help with attitude. You do not have to join a gym and spend 3 hours there. Make a resolution to do something as easy as walking around the block. Start with 3 days a week and you decide if you want to increase it. It will make you feel better- it will!
#4- Make a resolution to keep a cleaner home. Your home is your number one sanctuary. Although we all claim we live at our school, etc., truth—there are 168 hours and even if you spend most of your home time sleeping or relaxing, it is the place your body will physically spend most of its time. Therefore, a cleaner home is a better home, a better home is a healthier teacher.
#5- Join a group, organization, club. There are tons of groups to join, if you are on social media, they are posted everyday. Get back to church, join a fitness group, dance group, Mom’s club, Dad’s club, sports league, book club, social media group. Find another group of “like-minded” individuals so you can have a life outside of teaching. It will give you something to look forward to and focus your energy in a fun way with others that are not teachers.
Bonus Resolution: Go to bed 1/2-1 hour earlier and/or wake up 1/2-1 hour earlier. The whole early to bed early to rise concept.

Remember, a healthier teacher is a better teacher. If you are like most people, health is always the #1 New Year’s resolutions. We do not have to get into the “Quitting” topic as we are professionals and know what we need to quit. I decided to choice the 5 above to focus more on non-tangible and easier goals. If you do them all, I guarantee your 2024 will be an improvement for you and your students.
