Cafe Bulletin Board

This is a freebie on my TPT Store. Enjoy!

This summer my favorite professional reading was the Daily Five. I can’t believe I didn’t come up with this idea myself. All thanks goes to Mr. Smith, a collegue at my school, for loaning me the book. It was in a glass bookcase at UCF and I passed it each weekend. It always caught my eye and when I saw it on Mr. Smith’s desk it caught my eye again. With excitement and enthusiasm I praised his professional reading choice. I knew it had to be good if it made the bookcase at UCF. When he was done he loaned it me. Here’s my quick and easy summary— There’s five centers that students can choose from “Read to Self”, “Read to Someone”, “Work on Writing”, “Listen to Reading”, and “Work on Words”. Well after I read that I was left unsatisfied. I taught summer school reading and already had my first taste of what’s to come with the demands of Common Core State Standards. I was excited and up for the challenge so I quickly found another book by Gail Boushey and Jean Moser. I thought this would help me meet the needs and demands of CCSS.
The Cafe’ Book by the Two Sisters arrived to my house just before the start of the school year. I spent every minute trying to finish reading it and almost simultaneously trying to figure out how I can make it work with all the new implementations in Volusia County. I had to make it work with a large ELL population in my class and another teacher taking more than 1/2 their center time. I had to make it work with the VCS curriculum map. Needless to say I had to improvise. I placed in on a bulletin board right next to my guided reading table. My students are able to place sticky notes with their names to show what skill they are working on each week. Here’s a picture of my bulletin board before I started using it.
